Adobe Photoshop is a great application to use. Photoshop can be utilized with magazines, flyers, billboards, etc. to enhance an image, add text with effects to a photograph, etc. For example, there can be a great picture of a couple in front of a nice building but there are a couple of random people in the background and a stop sign. Using Photoshop, a person can take out the random people and the stop sign to make the picture look more special. But, people may take advantage of the abilities Photoshop can do to an original document as well. For example, in the Digital Photography article written by Bonnie Meltzer, she mentions how there was a cover of OJ Simpson on Time Magazine which shows, “Simpson’s face darker, blurrier, and unshaven.” While the illustrator for Time Magazine wanted to make the picture “more artful, more compelling,” than the mug shot of Simpson in Newsweek, this goes into the questions of ethics on whether a police photo should be manipulated or are “certain kinds of images symbols for complicated attitudes and issues,” being shown in the picture according to Meltzer. I agree that Photoshop should not be used to add effect to a criminal for example because that can be unfair for the person in the picture to make them look more like a stereotypical bad guy. I even find it silly that some pictures are Photo shopped to make a person look like a completely different human being which is very deceiving. Some people strive to look like a person on a magazine which may not even be their actual appearance! Photoshop should be used to enhance a photo, not change a person/photo completely or in an unfair way.
